Africon Champion Converts to Heroes of Newerth

Jonathan “Loda” Berg, who led the SK Gaming DotA team which won Africon 2008, has teamed up with ButtonBashers to form a new Heroes of Newerth (HoN) team . The team consists of one American and six Swedes and is one of the first Heroes of Newerth teams to be recruited on a professional level.

Berg was formally the captain of the SK DotA team before they split up last year. The SK DotA team won Africon 2008 and are technically still the current Africon Champions, since no event was held in 2009.

SK DotA were undefeated at Africon 2008 and were able to comprehensively beat the Protea DotA Squad on a number of occasions. FT, a team who entered Africon 08, were also able to beat the Protea team, resulting in a second place for FT and third place for our Protea DotA Squad.

Berg’s new team will be playing in the HoN League: Check-Six Sidewinder Tournament with some of the best teams around Europe and the United States. The team was initially known as Team Smackdown and showed fantastic promise.

This is a fantastic step in the right direction for competitive HoN. All it takes is for the biggest Multi Gaming Organisations (MGO) to create competitive teams and other teams will follow. Hopefully this will drive home the fact that HoN has the potential to be the next biggest competitive game.
