Chinese Developers May Have Plagarised Torchlight

Entertainment Game Labs (EGLS) has apparently been plagiarising some of the artwork used in Runic Games’ Torchlight franchise which may have landed them in hot water.

The massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game, Armed Heroes Online from EGLS has apparently ‘stolen’ most of the assets from Torchlight. Travis Baldree, Runic Games CEO, voiced his opinion on Twitter, claiming the company stole assets from the franchise.

According to PC Gamer, Baldree said that he didn’t see ANY monsters that didn’t belong to them. He went as far as to post on the TouchArcade forums and listed some examples of the plagiarism as well. The video seen below of Armed Heroes shows off the features of the game and some pictures below depict the Torchlight assets.

In response, a member of the EGLS team made a post on the same forum claiming the difference between assets and denied any plagiarism had occurred. They had compared a list of characters from things like World of Warcraft, Diablo 2, Torchlight and Armed Heroes Online to show the similarities between all characters and stated that “members of our team are both crazy game fans and ecstatic movies lovers. They indeed get inspirations from other games and movies”.

Baldree then countered the argument with another post saying that the sound manifest in AHO is exactly the same as the one in Torchlight and even includes typos.

PC Gamer conducted an interview with Baldree regarding the game and the similarities and he says that all he wants is for the game to be removed from the App Store and Runic Games is not seeking any legal damages or royalties.
