Ways of Becoming a Rioter

There are many ways for us ordinary League of Legends (LoL) gamers to climb the ladder and find ourselves working for Riot Games.

The most popular way to get a salary from Riot Games would be to become one of the best teams in the world and compete in the LoL Championship Series (LCS). This would be great if South Africa had the talent, although it seems our talent is on the rise. The one downfall is that very few players will actually make it to that big stage.

Another way is to apply for a job on the Riot Games website. This would be great if not every single person in the history of LoL was flooding their databases with CV’s. It is also more difficult for South Africans because if it is a choice between a South African and someone that lives closer to the server, Riot Games would more than likely choose the person that lives closer. There are many different parts of Riot Games that you can apply to, all of which requires at the least experience in the field and more often than not a degree pertaining to something computer related.

There is a way for your average Joe to get their foot in the door though. Become a forum volunteer, this way Riot Games will see that you are committed to the betterment of LoL and its community. This is a little tedious as you would have to help out on the forums over some time before they give you the rights to moderate the forums, but this is a very big step in the right direction. If you then succeed by being consistently helpful and have shown that you are online as often as, if not more often than, the actual Riot employees, you could find yourself being invited to join their family.

Anyone can become a “Wrenchman”, as Riot Games calls it, as long as they follow the rules and are always striving for the betterment of the LoL community.

So far only one South African has made it into the Riot Games family, that being Trevor “Quickshot” Henry, and it is hopeful that the South African community can make a name for themselves, in a good way, with Riot Games. That might just enable us to get an offline server for LAN events such as the Telkom Do Gaming Championships (DGC) that happens every year.
