Team Builder Live Beta

The League of Legends (LoL) Team Builder live beta has rolled out across the Russian (RU) and the Europe Nordic and East (EUNE) servers.

Team Builder is a new queue where players can queue up for a specific champion, position and role. When you have let the system know what you want to play, you can build your own team or join an existing team where players have already said where they are going and what they are playing.

The reasoning behind this new queue is that teamwork doesn’t start when you get on Summoner’s Rift, but when you start choosing your roles and champions. According to Riot Games, “Champion Select sets the tone of the game and greatly impacts whether you feel like you're going to have a fun match. We've been doing a lot of research on Champion Select, and identified two key areas we'd like to improve with Team Builder.”

Those two key areas are:

  • Time pressure is bad for communication.
  • We weren't taking into account player intention.

Lyte, Lead Social Systems Designer at Riot Games, goes on to explain these areas. “In the ideal Champion Select, everyone gets their preferred role and feels like they're on the same page for the match; however, if multiple players are looking to play the same role or lane, it's extremely difficult to come to an agreement when the clock is ticking.” He goes on to say that “everyone enjoys LoL differently. Some players play to win every single game; other players want to try out new creative strategies, or practice that new champion they just got. We needed a system that could match like-minded players together so that if you wanted to try a crazy new strategy, you could find four other players who wanted to do the same thing.”

Team Builder is intended to bring players together that can complement each other’s expectations the moment they enter the lobby.

During the live beta, Riot Games will be collecting matchmaking data on every champion, position and role that players decide on. The live beta will be released for 48 hours on each server, starting with RU and EUNE; going on to the Turkey (TR) and Europe West (EUW) and then Brazil (BR) and North America (NA), then Oceania (OCE) and Korea (KR) and lastly Latin America South (LAS) and Latin America North (LAN).

It will be exciting to see how this new queue will affect the teams in the LoL Telkom Do Gaming League (DGL) as they will be hopefully be able to find a new meta as a result of queuing for strange team compositions.
