Clarity in New LoL Design

Riot Games is currently remaking Summoner’s Rift and every now and then they make an in-depth post about one of the reasons why. This time the reason was clarity. The change in colours and textures is brought up and explained.

At the moment, it is a little difficult for players to spot themselves in team fights easily or figure out if their opponents have a higher minion score with just a quick glance at the scoreboard. This is information that players should come by easily and not be distracted by many different elements while looking for it.

There was quite a discussion about how to make these aspects of the game easier for the player to access. “These are the kind of changes that the gameplay clarity team tackles on a daily basis, and they're ones that we firmly believe can be improved in League of Legends.” says clarity and environment designer Richard "Nome" Liu.

Some of you may be asking “what is clarity?” Clarity consists of visuals, gameplay, design, art, and everything in-between. This pertains to League of Legends (LoL) in the form of the availability of information as well as the intentional concealing of it.

This can make the game quite a bit more competitive as players won’t be distracted with looking for the information. It will also help some of the less-skilled teams in the LoL Telkom Do Gaming League (DGL) get their hands on the information and figure out where they need to improve to kick it with the big boys and girls.
