LoL Server Crash - Games Postponed

It is unfortunate when Telkom Do Gaming League (DGL) matches have to be postponed as a result of game servers crashing. This, unfortunately happened last night, Sunday 23 February, not long before many matches were scheduled to be played.

As of 6:21pm on Sunday 23 February, the League of Legends (LoL) client started having some problems. According to Riot Games, “the System Administrators, Platform and Network engineers on call quickly spotted platform errors on various services and inability to process internal calls, which led to Europe West (EUW) being not able to create new games.”

This is unfortunate as many of the teams in the LoL DGL schedule match start times for a Sunday night between the times of 6pm and 8pm. The server took approximately three hours to become stable again and by that time teams had decided to postpone the matches for today, Monday 24 February. This could pose a potential problem if the servers were to crash again as it is the last day that Week Three matches are able to be played.

Although not finding the root cause of the disruption, the server seems stable for now. A very similar incident back in December 2013 and apparently this downtime stems from those same problems.

Riot TMX, Live Services Manager, has posted on the forums detailing what happened during the three hours of downtime and has stressed that Riot Games’ next step is to further investigate the root cause of the incident and take additional steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again. He also apologises on behalf of Riot Games about the incident and hopes that the community was not too affected by the unfortunate incident.

It is not uncommon for there to be problems after a server or Internet provider maintenance and it seems that Riot Games will need to take steps to ensure that this won’t be a regular occurrence in the future. It is said that they are still building the new Amsterdam centre as the Frankfurt Data Centre is not able to withstand the ever increasing amount of players.
