Curse of Naxxramas Set for July Release

Blizzard has announced on the Battle.net community forum that its upcoming singleplayer expansion for Hearthstone, Curse of Naxxramas, will be arriving worldwide during the month of July.

The post, from community manager “Aratil”, read:

“Just wanted to give everyone a head's up that we are currently targeting to release Curse of Naxxramas during the month of July. Unfortunately, we still have a lot of implementing and bug fixing to get through, so please stay tuned!”

This is pretty exciting for Hearthstone players, as the game has not added any cards since its release, and this will be the first additions to be received into the game. As with any competitive card game (CCG), new cards almost always mean new strategies and new ways of dealing with certain problems, and it is always interesting to see how people adapt to the changes.

It looks like the expansion will only hit after the completion of the Hearthstone Telkom Do Gaming League (DGL) 2014 Winter Leg, but we may still see what the players come up with a bit later in the year.

Curse of Naxxramas was originally announced in April, and is a five-winged dungeon that you need to work your way through. The first of the wings is free to all players, but the remaining wings require either in-game gold or alternately real money to play, much like the Arena system already in place.

Hearthstone Production director Jason Chayes, in a statement to Gamespot, emphasised the fact that you will be able to play the expansion without spending a cent:

“We basically wanted to make it that no matter how you were experiencing Naxxramas, you were able to unlock the various wings for free just by earning the gold and unlocking it," he told us in April.

That's an important philosophy we have for Hearthstone, is that if you choose to never put in a dime, you can still access all of the content over time. So that is a core part of how Naxxramas is designed. Beyond that, though, if a player is interested in getting to that content a bit faster, they can spend a bit more money and access it as well."

The pricing involved in Curse of Naxxramas is expected to be announced sometime this week.
