Senior Game Designer Talks HS

Senior Game Designer Ben Brode recently 'sat down' with pro-gamer and Director of LiquidHearth Kevin 'Monk' Dong to discuss changes to the Hearthstone metagame and possible future updates.

The interview, covers various pressing topics such as the inclusion of RNG [phenomenon of randomosity] cards such as Nat Pagle and Tinkmaster Overspark at high level games, as well as the lack of team/clan support in Blizzard's free-to-play digital collectible card game (CCG).

Some interesting points:

  • Brode believes that ' randomness can increase the skill required to play the game'.

"Cards that increase randomness into the game state actually can increase the amount of skill required to solve novel game states. So I think randomness adds exciting new stories and suspense and it can make the game more skilful if you do it right."

  • Angry Chicken used to have the highest win rate on ladder while King Mukla is 'consistently the number one legendary in the game'.

  • Don't expect any major updates till well after the launch of Hearthstone for mobile and iPad.

"One of the things we're concerned about [though] is making sure we hit a spot that's not going to overwhelm players who've just joined us once we've maybe launched the iPad version. "

"We don't want to introduce a new player to the game and then immediately hit them with new content when they haven't figured out the current content yet. "

Activision Blizzard recently announced Hearthstone as one of three 'potential groundbreaking franchises' for 2014, alongside Blizzard: Heroes of the Storm, and the Chinese market-targeted Call of Duty Online.
