2014 Telkom DGL Breaks New Records

The 2014 Telkom Do Gaming League (DGL) has grown again to record numbers, strengthening its position as the largest online gaming league in South Africa with over 5700 gamers.

Ricus Groenewald, Telkom Gaming specialist, says the league has once again grown by 36 per cent on the back of a successful 2013 season which culminated in the Do Gaming Championship where the prize pool more than doubled to over R1.30 million, making it the largest prize pool in South African gaming history.

“We’ve introduced new games this season like Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts and we’ve seen huge growth in Dota 2,” he says.

Dota 2 registrations for the 2014 Summer Leg saw 273 teams enter doubling the amount of teams from last year, making it the largest league in SA Gaming history.

Another league which saw impressive entries was Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. Since the game launched into open beta, there has been a huge increase in numbers too.

The registrations looked like they were going to peak at around the 230 mark but when Blizzard launched the game into open beta, the numbers grew to 293 entries. This marks the highest number of players ever entered into a 1v1 competition in the DGL.

“This year we’re also launching various console titles and we are pleased to announce that the move into the first-person shooter genre has been well received, with Call of Duty: Ghosts Xbox 360 league seeing 36 teams enter,” Groenewald says,

There has been a good response across the FPS genre, including Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as a great response to the Battlefield 4 5 vs. 5 and 8 vs. 8 competitions as well as some strong entries for the Call of Duty: Black Ops League.

The fighting genre and rhythm genre were also both introduced this year and both games have seen some good support from the community for launch leagues. Mortal Kombat 9 has seen 20 entries into the league while Osu! garnered 67 players.

Surprisingly, TrackMania: Nations Forever rules the roost in the racing genre and has pulled in over 100 players for the Summer Leg. Gran Turismo 6 is following closely behind at 95 entries.

“We are excited to be a part of the South African gaming scene and to have such fantastic support from the gamers in their continued support of the Telkom Do gaming league," Groenewald added.

"Our sponsors are also looking forward to making this the best DGL to date and we are proud to welcome some new faces to the Do Gaming League. It seems that as we continue to grow, so does the interest of everyone around us and we look forward to another fantastic year of gaming,”
