In Far Cry 3 gamers will take on the role of Jason Brody, a tourist who has been separated from his girlfriend, has gotten lost on a chain of islands, and must now survive the perils before him. Jeremy Keen, lead designer at Ubisoft Montreal, took journalists through a live demonstration of Far Cry 3 at Gamescom 2011 on one of the earlier missions in the game. Here's what we saw.
Right from the get go, Far Cry 3 looks absolutely beautiful. True to its nature, it's polished and possesses a clarity you rarely lay your eyes on. With the tropical setting, colours burst out before you, forcing you to take a second to just gaze out on the magnificence that is this tropical island somewhere in the Pacific.
The developers have placed huge emphasis on encouraging players to venture out into the vast open world. They want you to go on the path less taken and will even reward you for doing so.

In the demo we were very soon confronted with one of the main characters within Far Cry 3. Voss, as he is named, is not someone you would like to get to know, no matter the situation. Crass, rude and arrogant beyond reality, the unstable nature of his persona is certainly terrifying.
“A whole cast of characters inhabit the island, each bringing their own flavour,” says Keen.
In the live demonstration, Brody was overlooking an encampment that had been overrun by Voss’s forces. With corpses lying all over, going in with guns blazing would be considered a difficult option but still viable. Venturing some distance away, a zip line is found leading down to the camp. The alternate path taken rewards you with a sniper rifle which you quickly use to shoot barrels of petrol around the various guards, eliminating them in a flurry of fire and flames.
You begin to attract more and more attention, bullets flying left, right and centre. Taking cover would seem like your best option, and so Keen did this to show off one of the finer details of the game. Jumping into the water, you immediately start to reduce the beating you have been taking. Using the current in the water, you can swiftly swim to move into a covered position. This once again turns the tide in your favour.

Far Cry 3’s demonstration was more than beautiful, it was absolute eye-candy. It was rather short than what journalists have experienced elsewhere, but it did suggest that sometimes less is better. Time will tell if Far Cry 3 can trump its mediocre second installment, but it’s definitely on the right path.
