Diablo: A History

When looking at Diablo as a whole, you need to head back to 1996 when the first game was released and at the time it was a game that was able to breach the gaming industry and make a huge difference in what gaming is today.

The first game in the series, Diablo introduced three different classes into the game. The entire premise of Diablo is based around an ongoing war between Angels and Demons, each trying to compel man to join their cause. The three lords of Hell were forced into the world of humanity and with the help of Archangel Tyrael, the three Lords were trapped in soulstones.

A man named Leoric, who happened to be a king, claimed the monastery which was built over the burial of the soulstones. Diablo then entered the nightmares of Lazarus, the archbishop, who lured him to the soulstone and destroyed it. Diablo was then freed and possessed the king and his son to send knights and priests into battle against other kingdoms. In Diablo, players arrived at the time in the kingdom of Tristram as all the townsfolk were leaving since they had no king, and no army while the darkness ruled the land.

The quest of Archbishop Lazarus is given to the player by Deckard Cain who is the last living human in the line of the Horadric mages and appears in all of the games. Gamers will remember Cain for lines such as “Stay a while and listen” as you rush to him with unidentified items for him to take a look at.

Leoric was reanimated as the Skeleton King and the player finds themselves having to do battle with a number of people including the King and Lazarus, as well as Diablo in his mortal form, which leaves him trapped once again in a soulstone.

At the end of the game, the hero thrusts the soulstone of Diablo into his skull in order to contain him, which backfires as Diablo takes control of the warrior hero. The Rogue and Sorcerer (the other two classes) become corrupted too and come through Diablo 2 as Blood Raven and the Summoner respectively.

The expansion pack, Diablo: Hellfire came out which was actually produced by Sierra On-Line and added in some unlockable multiplayer modes, a new character and some new quests and tasks involving Na-Krul in the town of Tristram.

Onto Diablo 2

Diablo 2 came out in 2000 and received updates from Blizzard up until six months ago. The game introduced five different characters and took place a few years after the first game in the land of Sanctuary.

After the destruction of Tristram, Cain is known as the only survivor and gamers may recall the quest of having to go and save the old man who is kept hostage in a wooden cage despite his powers of identification and being a reknowned “mage”.

Many gamers who played Diablo 2 might recall an Act in the game where a cloaked figure was walking across the lands. That is the character from Diablo known as the Dark Wanderer. Slowly, over time, the unnamed warrior is known as the “root” of all the evil.

The second game sheds more light on the story behind the Corruption and the soulstones. Andariel, Duriel, and Mephisto are all introduced with the return of Diablo in the final act of the game. Both Mephisto and Baal (from the expansion) are then brought back from their soulstones with the help of Izual, the fallen angel who also serves as a smaller ’boss’ in Act four.

After the player dispatches both Mephisto and Diablo, the story carries on in the Lord of Destruction expansion pack which unleashed two more characters. Players face off against Baal who is trying to corrupt the Worldstone. The expansion pack sends the player to Harrogath, a world opened by Tyrael, who is tasked to defend the Worldstone and gain the trust of the people of Harrogath by slaying minor bosses in different Acts.

A deal is then struck by the councillors of Harrogath to allow Baal access to the Worldstone Keep in exchange for sparing the Harrogath lands. After slaying the leader of the elders, a huge battle between the Ancients and the player will ensue which some may agree is one of the toughest battles in the Diablo series.

After gaining access to the Worldstone Keep, the player finds that Baal has already corrupted the Worldstone and, after killing Baal, Tyrael is tasked to destroy the Worldstone and opens a portal to Destruction’s End for the player to enter.

Diablo 3

Enter Diablo 3, one of the most anticipated games in the lives of many gamers. Players will kick off in Sanctuary yet again some twenty years after the Diablo 2 saga. The plot centres around Azmodan and Belial in the pursuit of the Black Soulstone.

There is little known about this artefact save the fact that Leah has possession of it and wants to use it to trap the two evils. Azmodan is aware of the Black Soulstone and its powers though, so there is sure to be a fight to be had.

Diablo 3 will be the end of the storyline that started in the original game but will probably see an expansion as well. Diablo has been confirmed to return despite his death and Archangel Tyrael and Archangel Imperius will be included in the game along with the return of Deckard Cain.

Diablo 3 will have a host of new features present in the game which is fantastic, but Blizzard also hasn’t skimped on the storyline at all. Apparently it will have similar story elements to the the previous two games and their expansions.

Diablo 3 is set to release worldwide on 15 May this year which is just under 12 years since the second game came out.

In terms of development, Blizzard North first started working on the game in 2001 and Blizzard have not compromised one bit . Gamers can check out some gameplay videos that Do Gaming has done on the wizard or the barbarian.

The game had undergone three revisions before reaching the standards that the team were happy with so it’s definitely expected to be a strong contender for Game of the Year for 2012.
