Blizzard Talks Diablo 3 and Expansion

Developer Blizzard announced yesterday that its hit action-role playing game, Diablo 3 will be receiving an expansion entitled Reaper of Souls.

In an interview with GameSpot, the developer discussed two of the more controversial features within Diablo 3 and how they would be incorporated into the upcoming expansion.

Josh Mosqueira, lead game director went on to suggest that both mechanics, particularly the auction house, would still feature in Reaper of Souls but that further improvements to game play would hopefully detract from its use.

"Trading items is one of the things you do in a game like Diablo and because of that we still feel that the original intent of the auction house-providing a safe and secure means of players to trade items-is still working really well." says Mosqueira.

"In fact, in the territories that don't have an auction house the number of account compromises is totally out of whack with the rest of the world."

Both the in-game auction house and PvP arena have been widely criticised and somewhat exploited by the Diablo community and were a major point of concern for the future of the series.

"The problem is that we made the auction house too easy to use. There's not a lot of friction there. And that's really been a lot of the motivation behind Loot 2.0, to really make sure you're finding the best items in the most fun way possible: through playing the game."

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls not only adds new story content to the game but also an additional character class, The Crusader - a righteous warrior that has been hardened through relentless, brutal combat - and major improvements to the game's looting mechanic, enemies and an improvement Paragon levelling system.

The story will follow the fifth act of the vanilla title, pitting players against Malthael, the fallen Archangel of Wisdom.

Malthael has been absent from the series since Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction but has now returned as the Angel of Death and taken possession of the infamous Black Soulstone - that contains the essence of the prime Evil.

As of writing, there is still no expected release date for Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls.
