Diablo 3 Auction House Closed

Developer Blizzard has confirmed that it has shut down the controversial gold and real money auction house for its hack and slash RPG Diablo 3, in Europe.

The Auction house tab exists only as a place for players to finish up their current auctions before it disappears altogether. No new auctions can be made and remaining auctions have been automatically finalised - either going to the highest bidder or returned to the seller.

Furthermore, players have until 24 June 2014 to claim any gold or items from their Auction House ‘Completed’ tab, from which point the marketplace will be gone forever.

"All active auctions will expire as normal following the shutdown of the gold and real-money auction houses,” says Blizzard.

"Once the shutdown is complete, items will either be delivered to the current highest bidder or returned to the seller, appearing in each player’s Completed tab. Unclaimed gold will also appear in the Completed tab. Players will be able to claim gold and items and from this tab until June 24, 2014. Items and gold not claimed by this date will be consumed by Treasure Goblins, never to be seen again."

Blizzard’s decision to remove the Auction House comes as a result of the developers feeling as if it was counterproductive to the feeling that they were trying to instil with Diablo.

"It became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the Auction House system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo's core gameplay: kill monsters to get cool loot,” said production director John Hight.

The new ‘Smart Loot’ system that was implemented in the Loot 2.0 patch encourages finding new gear (rather than buying or trading) with the use of bind-on-account Legendary items. The new drop rates and smart loot system is fine-tuned to support the launch of the upcoming expansion pack, Reaper of Souls, next week.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls will release on Tuesday, 25 March for the PC and Mac.

Blizzard has also stated the expansion will be ported to console versions of Diablo III in the future.
