CoD4 Opens up With Upsets

The last leg of the Call of Duty 4 (CoD4) DGL 2012 has already seen some upsets, despite being only in its third week of play, with ASF French twice on the losing end, now with a 2 – 0 loss last night against xTc. This has put xTc, BFB Regiment and DI Chaos on an equal footing with two wins each and one loss, giving them a score of seven, just two less than Bravado's nine.

ASF's John 'Fingazz' Langford kept finding himself unable to connect to the server in last night's game, resulting in a 4 v 5 situation for ASF for the most part of the second map. That brought on a 13 – 4 score on Crash to xTc by the end of the night, the second map won by xTc after they came on strong on Crossfire with a 13 – 11 win.

This is not to take away from xTc's upping their game as it were. Robin 'Phr33k' Ferreira, xTc's captain, says that they have been really focusing lately as they want a good spot for the upcoming Telkom DGL 2012 Championships.

“We were First Div and are getting in some good practice with the Premier teams now. There's a huge gap in the competitive level between First and Premier,” he says.

Their game against ASF initially saw a 45 minute delay and a time-out as Langford and Henk 'quakeR' Steyn encountered problems. XTc got the lead on the map, ending the half at 8 – 4.

“When we switched, ASF pulled things back a bit, with Dustin 'KoNtraBanN' Rhodes acing us in one round, bringing the game to 12 – 11,” says Ferreira. “They were playing it slow and fast and mixing it up. But then Ashley 'KoekzoR' Bierman pulled a 2 v 1; he clutched it for us and got the victory; and that really motivated us.”

XTc were also coming off the back of a 13 – 6 map win against Bravado in the Survival Series. This has been quite a boost for the team, says Ferriera, and after this clutch their morale was at a high.

“It is difficult to do a 4 v 5 [referring to ASF] but we were also very focused,” he says. “We're really not wanting a bad draw in the Champions Cup. We tend to usually face Bravado in the early stages, and we don't want that.”

Currently, if xTc continue in this form, they won't have to face that problem. In fact, with ASF still due to face Bravado in week 5, it's unlikely they will now take a very high placing and it could end up being them that will face Bravado in the playoffs early on. Remember, a loss in the first round of the Champions Cup drops the team to the First Division.

Immersion (iM) are currently at the bottom of the log, with only two matches played, after being ousted by ASF in the first week, and they're still due to face Bravado in their pick and play. Meanwhile, Premier newcomers Divine Gaming are showing less strength in Premier than they have in the lower divisions – with all three games played ending in a loss – a good case for Ferreira's statements above, that Premier is quite a jump from First Division.
