Gamescom: Modern Warfare 3 Hands-On

With all the hype around Battlefield 3, little has been said about Modern Warfare 3 as of late. We got a hands-on of Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox 360 at Gamescom 2011 and experienced the Spec Ops mode.

In the game I donned the armour of a Juggernaught and headed off into the open to defuse eight IED’s as my mission objective. Covering me from a nearby building was Guy Beahm, Modern Warfare 3's community manager, with his sniper rifle. Things started out quite slowly as I had to come to terms with the controls and for some reason kept throwing grenades in front of me.

To tell the truth, I couldn’t find much in Modern Warfare 3 than I haven't seen in previous titles in the series. There's not really anything, in my opinion, that warrants an entirely new game because, for the most part, it just feels and plays the same. It’s a harsh truth to say, but I think that Modern Warfare 3 needs a hell of a lot more to compete with the likes of Battlefield 3 in the first person shooter market.

It is fair to say, though, that there was an element of fun about Modern Warfare 3 and I did enjoy the cover being given from my teammate and the way things sounded and looked. Because it all seemed familiar to me, time just flew by. I ended up getting all eight of the IED's defused in just under six minutes and my partner seemed proud.

Spec Ops has never been a major part of the Modern Warfare franchise and more than likely it still won't be a big deal in the next game. There needs to be some major focus put on the multiplayer and single-player and these must impress for Modern Warfare 3 to fly off the shelves the way its competitors will.

More about the game will probably be revealed in the next two weeks in the build-up to the Call of Duty XP event along with some exciting new feature announcements.

To compare Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 is not really fair because, for the most part, not much can compete at this point in time. In its own right though, Modern Warfare 3 as a standalone game is probably going to do really well and Spec Ops is a solid feature for the game and will bring even more hours of enjoyment to the franchise.
