MW3: Let the Playoffs Begin!

The seeding leg of the Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) Telkom DGL 2012, sponsored by Megarom, Dell Alienware and Monster Energy, is now moving into the playoffs to determine which Division each team is to go into. With sixteen groups of around six teams each, a playoff is the best way to determine exactly who the top dogs currently are.

Teams have until midnight tonight to log any errors in the results log. If there are no disputes then these will be the results.

The clear winners in the groups are:

  • |mG|-MW3 (Group A);
  • HpX|Gameover |GO (Group C);
  • impi>mw3 (Group D);
  • reN || Renegades (Group E);
  • vtL.ZA MW3 (Group F);
  • pX~MW3 (Group G);
  • LAB-Mw3-2012 (Group H);
  • [xTc]MW3 (Group I);
  • |KK|Knights (Group K);
  • BoB m|E|s (Group L);
  • mMx.MW3 (Group N);
  • Bravado (Group O);
  • NCX1 (Group P)
Group B saw BR|Razerz take first place but only on a rounds difference with iM'MW3, who both had equal points. The same thing happened in Group J between RMC_E (first) and w2F-R (second). Group M saw three teams score equal on points and only separated by rounds difference – they are, in winning order, LOA|-BoW-, divine` MW3 and ORoFO-Alpha Dogs.

It was interesting to see that the |KK|Killers came second to their fellow team-mates |KK|Knights in Group K.

How the playoffs will work

The DGL Knowledge Base has a great article on how the playoffs will work from here but here are the highlights.

The last positions of each team will determine which Cup they will compete in. There are three cups – the Champions Cup, Novice Cup and Newcomers Cup. Teams that placed first and second in their group will go into the Champions Cup; teams that came third and fourth into the Novice Cup and fifth and sixth placers go into the Newcomers Cup.

This is when the rounds difference hurts because ORoFO-Alpha Dogs came third in Group M but had equal points to the top two teams. At the end of the day a few rounds pushes them into the Novice Cup instead of the Champions Cup.

The Cups are single elimination and each match will be a best-of-three maps. Overall, 32 teams are competing in each Cup and things will spread over a two week period.

Because of the size of the MW3 DGL, the Premier Division will consist of eight teams but from there each Division will consist of groups. The First and Second Divisions will have 16 teams split into two groups while the Third and Fourth Divisions will have 32 teams split into four groups.

See all the details here as well as details on how the second leg will work. For more explanation on why the committee has made the decisions it's made, read this article.

It's going to be great watching these playoffs. Will Bravado and Vitriolic manage to secure the same kind of dominance they did in Call of Duty 4 DGL? Or will the many other teams show them who's boss? Who will we see in Premier in the next leg?
