According to SiliconEra, Sony has applied for a patent for a new kind of demo. The patent details a system that has nearly the complete full game on the disc, but slowly removes features from the disc until the game is purchased.
The demo will feature triggers that will disable certain aspects of the game after a set number of plays or a lapsed time. These could include replacing a weapon with a weaker one.
There are also subtle ideas such as removing certain sound effects or changing colour depth. Gamers will then need to buy the full version in order to experience the game in all its glory.
Sony has said that this system of degradable demos is better than the current system because gamers will be able to experience the features of the full game for a limited amount of time. The root of this patent revolves around an idea that current demos fail to provide players with an overall feel of the full game.
Hopefully this new idea will be completely crack-proof as should something like this ever be hacked or cracked, Sony will be giving its games away to the public for free.
