GTA 5’s Multiple Storylines Influenced by GTA 4

Dan Houser, co-writer on the GTA titles and Rockstar boss has explained that the multiple protagonists and cross-over storylines we can expect in Grand Theft Auto 5 was spawned during the creation of the GTA 4 expansion packs.

According to CVG, GTA 4 focused on European immigrant Niko Bellic, who met up with new characters, that were eventually given their own follow-up expansions, like “The Lost and Damned” and “The Ballad of Gay Tony”.

Grand Theft Auto IV GTA IV's expansions like "The Lost and the Damned" spawned the idea of pursuing several storylines with multiple characters.

These expansions and the idea of crossing over characters was a popular idea at Rockstar. Houser says, “It was partly just to do something totally new. Partly too, it was because at that point we were deep into the work on the two DLC episodes of GTA IV, and we thought, well, the bits where all the stories crossover is kind of cool, so why don’t we just do that in one game? So okay, let’s just do the multiple characters.”
