Electronic Arts has announced that Criterion will be reimaging Need for Speed Most Wanted.

“Criterion is shaking up the franchise with Need for Speed Most Wanted,” says Matt Webster, Executive Producer at Criterion Games.

“This is Most Wanted for a new generation of players. We've brought everything we know about racing, chasing and exploration and smashed them together in a highly connected open world automotive experience. Whether driving solo or racing with friends in our amazing new multiplayer experience, Autolog fires up competition out of everything as players compete to be most wanted amongst their friends.”

EA took its new Most Wanted to E3 this year. Read more about the presentation of the game here. Also have a look at the Need for Speed Most Wanted – E3 2012 Trailer below:

The Original Need for Speed Most Wanted

Need for Speed Most Wanted was first released on 16 November 2005 and was one of the first games released on Xbox 360.

The title saw the comeback of police chases and included free-roaming similar to Need for Speed Underground 2. Although the game had less extensive vehicle customisation features than the Underground titles, it received many positive reviews.

The story mode was done in a significantly different style than previous Need for Speed titles with CGI effects mixed with live action, which later appeared in other Need for Speed games like Carbon. This mode featured the Blacklist, a crew consisting of 15 racers players must beat one-by-one to unlock items such as parts, cars, tracks as well as to complete the career mode.

The Need for Speed Franchise

The Need for Speed series first launched in 1994 and a game in the franchise has been released each year since 1997 to 2011. It has been developed by several studios including Canadian-based EA Black Box and British-based Criterion Games.

Throughout the years the focus of the franchise has shifted by the same fundamental rules and mechanics have been consistent. The series has included visual and mechanical damage to none at all, to police pursuits, drifting and dragging, street circuits and open road racing.

After EA released Need for Speed Hot Pursuit on 16 November 2010, it won various awards including “Best Racing Game” and other “best of E3” awards and became the highest rated Need for Speed game.

Need for Speed is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time, selling over 100 million copies as of October 2009.
