According to a report on Massively.com and numerous other sources, German game developer BigPoint has announced that it is developing a massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game based on the new re-imagined BattleStar Galactica series from networks SyFy and NBC.
However, fans and gamers might not want to get too excited as the game will probably be a browser-based MMO. This is nice but not exactly what fans would hope for.
Bill Kispert, Universal Partnerships & Licensing vice president and manager of digital platforms, says it makes sense for BattleStar Galactica to enter the game market.
"Battlestar Galactica is a supremely gameable intellectual property, with compelling character classes, a fantastic array of ships and weaponry, multiple worlds, and a dramatic storyline," he says.
The game will apparently have tactical space combat and mission-based gameplay. Whether or not it will be something akin to Star Trek Online remains to be seen, but it may be more something in the lines of a mix between Eve Online and old space-combat games like the Wing Commander series, especially since Wing Commander was influenced a great deal from the original BattleStar Galactica (and, subsequently, there are moments in the new BattleStar Galactica series which reflect influences from Wing Commander as well, in this writer's opinion).
Gamers will apparently be able to choose between the factions of Cylon and Human, although it is not clear whether gamers will be able to play as a humanoid from the series.
But being browser-based there will be major limits to the game, which is disappointing.

The original BattleStar Galactica for retro fans. Great styles.
