Gamers may already be familiar with The Walking Dead, the AMC television series based on the comic books. Now it turns out that Activision are also headed into the first-person shooter (FPS) realms with the same franchise.
It’s not actually the first Walking Dead game though because Telltale has already hit huge success with its own version of the series . There are currently five episodes of that out and Robert Kirkman, the creator of the comic book series, has had big involvement in the games, with it becoming Telltale’s fastest-selling series.
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is an upcoming FPS developed by Terminal Reality who have been involved with things like the BloodRayne series, Kinect Star Wars and many others. The game is set to be published by Activision and can be expected to release sometime in 2013. This game is actually based on the television series as opposed to The Walking Dead by Telltale Games which is based on the comic books.
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is set as a prequel to the TV show and is set in Georgia and focuses on Daryl and Merle Dixon who are fighting off walkers to make their way towards Atlanta. The player will be playing as Daryl and the game will probably involve some kind of gung-ho choices to fight zombies or sneak past them with stealth mechanics.
According to the IMDB page for the game, Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker have both provided the voice for the characters in the game. Rooker is no stranger to the world of voice-overs as he recently came off Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, voicing the character Harper.
In an interview with GameInformer, comic series creator, Robert Kirkman, told GameInformer that he isn’t as heavily involved with the Activision game but is definitely looking at stuff.
“I know Activision is working very hard to make a cool-looking game and I’m hopeful it will be something that is worthy of the Walking Dead brand, but it’s not something that I’m actively, intimately involved with. Telltale’s game is based off the comic book, so I have a bunch more control over that than I do with what AMC does,” he says.
Kirkman was also quoted to have said that it wouldn’t be a great idea to do a first-person Walking Dead game because there is already stiff competition out there and gamers would always compare it to the Left 4 Dead series.
“I don’t think AMC read that quote. But I will say that this game is very much the Dixon brothers’ game. These two characters don’t exist in the comic, so the ability to play as those characters and learn more about those characters, who are very popular in the show, could actually push this game over the top and make it a worthwhile experience. That’s what I’m hoping on,” he says.
