Markus ‘Notch’ Persson has said that his next space-based game, 0x10c, may use a subscription based model. This has taken most gamers by surprise.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Persson said that the game will probably be monthly subscription because of the cost of running all the CPU’s on the server.
Before stating that though, Persson said that “it’s still not clear how we’re going to monetise the game”. It’s definitely an interesting move from the Minecraft mogul, but again an understandable one since the spaceship emulated CPU’s are quite complex and require a number of servers to keep running.
This isn’t something that gamers have anticipated, especially not from the man who came up with such a clever pricing model to introduce gamers into Alpha, and then make previous versions free to play for anyone in order to try the game out.
