R200k for Do Gaming Championships

Telkom Do Gaming will be offering R200k in prize money for the Do Gaming Championships. However, the Championships will be held online due to the rAge expo being unable to offer a block booking of tickets to Telkom Do Gaming for the Championships.

Telkom Do Gaming had intended to run the Do Gaming LAN Championships at the rAge expo, which has been the case for the last two years. Last year, Telkom Do Gaming paid for gamers’ LAN tickets and had intended to do so once more. However, the rAge expo could not offer a block booking for the LAN, which meant that the only way to hold a competition would be for gamers to buy the tickets themselves.

However, given the speed at which tickets sell out for the NAG LAN, this could have resulted in many gamers failing to secure tickets, which would make holding a competition problematic. Seating at the LAN is also allocated on a first come first serve basis, which would result in Do Gaming League players being spread out all over the LAN.

Given that gamers play in the various leagues for four legs over the course of the year in the build up to the Championships, it was decided to rather maintain the integrity and intensity of the Championships and utilise the money that would have been spent on LAN tickets for prize money.

Telkom Do Gaming will therefore be offering R200 000 in cash across the various leagues and divisions within each league as prize money for the Championships which will now be played online.

Telkom Do Gaming regrets that the Do Gaming Championships could not be held in LAN format, as we are aware many gamers see it as the ultimate test of skill. Details of the Championships along with the prize money breakdown will be released in the near future.

Read an update here on Do Gaming’s plans for possible online and LAN tournaments.

And how does online compare to LAN. BS.

Lan at my place gogogogo The amount of whining about online hero's should be intolerable after the finals but life goes on. Looking forward to the seeing the prize allocations and an online tourney of this magnitude could perhaps become a more regular event than rage should it be a success.

MPLD venue can hold 200 people, the venue is allready been paid for and I know the organiser (Diacide) very well. Im sure you guys can sort something out seeing the hall goes for about 5k or 10k a whole weekend. its also not far from the dome. just a suggestion, so this way you can keep the high prize money and also have the comp run on LAN

You can't be serious? An online event for R200 000? What a complete waste of money. Get a venue, perhaps the Mayhem hall in Boksburg. I think 95% of the people that were actually planning on attending this competition would agree, that they would rather have less prize money and instead have the event hosted on LAN.

How so? What community? Top hon team is cpt, top cod4 team is cpt, top dota team is cpt and the top cs team I believe is cpt.

You said majority tho, but I don't agree with that, with 600+ monthly lan at oc etc.

OC isn't the best idea, as has been said, most gamers are in the guateng region. Online is no place to have R200k worth of prizes, only lan because that is where everyone is legit and on equal footing (other than no sponsored pcs ).

Best place is to have it near an airport and accomidation

Lower the prize money and get a Venue in Gauteng. That way all the people who already booked their plane tickets/ accomodation won’t have wasted their money.

Hi there,

I’ll be more than happy to fill in the gaps. The article on the site doesn’t tell the whole story and the problem is no matter how I answer this it’s going to look like blame shifting or whatever is read into it, but that’s always about perception. It’s important to remember that everyone involved is always trying to give the gamers the best possible experience because it’s good for the whole industry and that’s good for everyone.

The root of the issue is that the request for tickets to us was only made on Wednesday afternoon – this was 4 days before the tickets for the NAG LAN went on sale at Computicket (1 August 2010). I was not able to make any changes with Computicket in enough time (they have various contracts in place to protect the buyers and it would have required meetings, approvals and so on) to ensure that the tickets were secured. In terms of blame – as much as everyone loves a scapegoat there isn’t one in this case. It was just a timing issue that involved too many players and logistics to solve quickly – The NAG LAN and rAge are rather large and complicated events.

I can’t speak for Do Gaming about rAge 2011 but we’re always open to anything that will grow the industry. Remember, rAge is simply an event and is not affiliated to any competition or competitive gaming organisation.

Hope this answers your questions and sorry for any disappointment – everyone on our side did everything they could to make it happen.

Later,

Michael James

Well I guess looking into the future, Online comps with cash prizes is pretty awesome, but again, the "equal footing" issue will always leave people with a bitter taste in their mouth.

So then it's the fault of the person responsible for requesting the tickets. If they only gave you 4 days' notice, it's their fault. Give us an effigy of them that we might burn it!

This is the most retarded thing i have ever heard in my life! 200k in prize money but they cant get another venue? The whole point of LAN events is to show how you can handle pressure, cope with with everyone on equal grounds, now you going to aimlessly give away prize money to someone who has a better line and is ultimately more comfortable in their own bedroom! Our infrastructure just doesn't allow for this type of gaming to take place. Richard, you couldn't of said it better, "equal footing issue will always leave people with a bitter taste in their mouth". I expected more from do gaming, I would rather play for R1000 like I have at the 2008 rage then play an online competition for R200k in across the board prize money.

I can maybe get a venue ... not sure how much we will be able to fit in but Its a pretty big venue ...got rooms that i can get discount for .... Think Telkom would be keen for this or not really?

IT is a 2 stroy conference centre that is 3 x Mplds size and similar in size to the rage VIP venue of last year .. has a kitchen for good food ..a rediculasly expensive bar LOL safe parking and a guest house. ? So would Do gaming be interested to move it there or are they saving money by giving online prize ?

Okay!

1. Everyone should chill out - Do Gaming made an error, BUT they should look at who didn't do the booking of the tickets and seriously take a look at why he is still working there.

2. @ Do Gaming: At rage last year, a hacker (in the css league was caught during BOTC - his team subsequently placed 3rd in the competition - but completely failed at rage and didnt even make it to the final 10 - big shock? I think not)

3. konvict brought this up somewhere - but rather cut that prize money in half find a good venue with the other half of the prize money and make your own type of Rage event - Surely Do Gaming knows a few companies who find it way too expensive to even make it to rage who would rather goto a smaller event directed at 'real' competitive gamers.

@ Everyone else - Understand that before Do we were forced to organise small unofficial comps in the LAN area - this gives us a real opportunity with REAL prize money - I'm sure with R200k on the line Do Gaming wouldnt stuff it up - when they have read the above posts telling them how online would be a bad move - so instead of all the bitching give constructive crits that we can ultimately Help DO GAMING move forward to bring us possibly the biggest (in terms of prize money) event SA has seen for a very long time.

Yes its disappointing we cant goto rage and whoever's fault that is should stand infront of a firing squad - but thats the end of the story - either keep on saying how pathetic it is and put in 0 crits, or give them good ideas so we can ultimately host a LAN what we as gamers want!

I can't believe this... it is total .

Firstly, how can you possibly hold Championship leagues online with any type of integrity with online players?

Secondly, my clan has already booked accommodation and flights to Joburg. Are we going to be refunded? No, I didn't think so.

I am utterly disappointed with DoGaming. rAge is an event that is ALWAYS held the first weekend of October. How could they only try to book tickets 4 days before tickets go on sale?

The gaming community of South Africa is supposed to be building up to match international standards.... and we can't even organize Finals at the premier LAN event of the year?

No wonder we are still looked upon as a 3rd world country. This is disgraceful and I am totally disgusted at the lack of effort that has apparently went into this championship effort.

If DoGaming thinks offering a bigger prize payout is a saving grace, they are sorely mistaken. Gamers (especially in South Africa) do not play games for possible cash benefits. We play for the love of gaming!

Well honestly the only reason most people wanted to go is for the DoGaming finals and now that they not held there i think many people are going to give it a miss, especially if they from far away like capetown as its too expensive if they not going for the competition and just to "leech".

I kinda saw this coming. Nowhere once did DoGaming mention rAge when they spoke about 2010 DoGaming Championships. And why would they if its not confirmed? Thats why I waited for an announcement before bothering with plane tickets. And besides, its quite stupid to book plane tickets this early with Kulula having some nice specials every now and then.

Quote:
cant move date, plane tickets dont change dates magically

No Robo, they dont change magically. They change electronically for R50.

+1 for merc. Best post so far.

Sounds nice Cranky. Im sure DoGaming will like that idea. Especially considering how the poll is going

Those of you who did book already, dont cancel yet as I have a feeling theres a reason the VIP venue wasnt available. I cant really speak on behalf of the other company, nor do I have enough facts to cover this, but if you ask me a certain gaming company (not calling names, im sure u all know who im refering to) booked out that VIP venue. They have publicly announced on a few sites throughout the year that they plan on hosting events at rage, and even qualifiers for a certain international event.

I'm not going to rAge anymore... was super amped to play with leet players like all of you for the first time in my Life, and Do gaming fail's...

IMO i think its a case of do gaming holding a carrot (R200K prize) in front of a donkey (Community) and see if we will bite. Not this Donkey!!

To my fellow gamers: I'm relatively new to the gaming industry, I've taken over ~OSAZ~ with the idea to jam with leetness amongst the pro's at rAge and after several months of working my "rear-end" of to learn what is 'Mirc', Teamspeak, pick-ups and most of all players on a personal level as well as a gaming level. This is the way how you would deter a new person from SA gaming.

Now i can understand most of the prob's of Do Gaming and with all due respect... LISTEN TO OUR PROB'S a bit

No admins to monitor Swearing and all the other stuff that goes on our server
No rAge

etc...

SGS are full of threads waiting for some feedback from admin.

this is just my 2c... (Oh i learned 2c from other gamers btw)

Bakkies out

much love everyone!!!

Do Gaming != SGS. We are completely different entities. SGS is simply the provider for Do Gaming league match servers. Do Gaming staff do not monitor SGS forums, nor are we responsible or involved in the policing of their servers.

We are already aware of the onslaught of complaints and problems which players are experiencing on SGS's public servers, but as we have absolutely nothing to do with the service, there is nothing Do Gaming can do to change the situation.

Furthermore, the SGS situation has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion -- lets not try to get the two issues confused.

@ Equinox, thx for clearing up.. like i said i'm new to the gaming world

I wasn't implying the two entities to be the same... i was merely mentioning the prob's we " the community have in general "

My apologies if i was outline mentioning the SGS in the thread but it was merely an Opinion that I raised in order to highlight the point of the problems we have.

@ Gridlock, yes i do play BC2...But I'm not selfish, if BC2 don't have a comp as yet, give the community the comps CSS, COD4, HON these are real players too.

@ Equinox, I think the point Bakgat is trying to make is that Online Championships will just fail because of the problems he mentioned.

@ Robo, cant really say much, but I did speak to the guy at the sc2 thing yesterday about it and it seems like its still on. I also told him they shud announce it sooner rather than later due to people who already booked plane tickets and the fact that rage tickets are selling like a bitch.

Guys thanks for all the comments as we really value your opinion. We are in the process of looking at other venues and dates to host the Championships and please add your vote to the poll.

Pointing fingers on the ticket reservations issue is not going to resolve the matter. We always had a good relationship with NAG and rAge. We tried to engage the rAge organisers on several occasions to finalise plans to no avail. We understand gamers are disappointed, but it is a privately run event and we have no say in the matter.

We need to move forward and as a result we are looking for an alternative for you guys and we will hopefully have some feedback in the next couple of days.

@Bakgat: I completely agree with you. That's why I voted for Online championships. I'm not a selfish gamer either and if we have online qualifiers we can accomodate for BC2, COD4, CSS, HoN and maybe even StarCraft 2.
If it was on LAN we would only have CSS and COD4. So I think you and I agree with each other, you just may be uninformed about the game requirements. It's 5 communities compared to 2.

Well the thing is an internet connection could be added to the LAN wherever it is with some effort yes but its not impossible and that would give you the connection needed for Hon and SC2 etc not so?

I believe that the fact remains it can not be an online event if thats the amount of prize money up for grabs it shouldnt even be an option imo. People are dishonest when there is nothing up for grabs can you imagine what they will do for big prize money??

Although I see a lot of anger directed at DoGaming here, I must point out that the organisers of rAge need to take some of the blame too.

Bad organisation all round if you ask me.

@ Bakgat, you are spot on there about the servers.

DoGaming is owned by Telkom
SGS is owned by Telkom
Elysium uses SGS as his own private ant farm

That is the way things are seen by the gamers.

On point going to rAge if there are no organised comps. I used to go to socialise and compete with people from my community, not leech porn and pirate warez.

rAge be dead for me!
