Telkom has announced to the press today that it is launching VDSL-based broadband products that will see customers enjoy speeds of up to 20Mbps and / or 40Mbps. The new products will launch on 4 March. Pricing starts at R727 a month.
Manelisa Mavuso, Telkom Managing Director: Consumer Services and Retail, says the development of these products revolutionises the internet experience in SA.
“This is in line with the greater focus on our ISP to enable powerful gaming platforms, business tools and the delivery of rich media content in an increasingly bandwidth-hungry society,” he says.
For now the new products will be launched in selective areas. The initial rollout will take place at street distribution cabinet (SDC) sites that underwent network upgrades in Benmore Gardens, Fourways and Waterkloof in Gauteng, Durban North in KwaZulu-Natal and Durbanville in the Western Cape.
From 4 March, customers can use the DSL Checker to see if they are within the footprint for the new products. (That application will only work from 4 March.)
Customers wanting the new products will require a VDSL modem from Telkom Internet that is backward compatible with ADSL to ensure optimal performance, and allows for remote management from the ISP.
The new offering comes off the back of Telkom's announcement that it will now soft cap customers, meaning that all customers have unlimited browsing but once they reach their cap it is only their line speed that will be effected.
