Shase Competes in Quake Live at Dreamhack

Travis “Shase” Weedon finished third in Group A of the Dreamhack Winter 2009 event, although he did manage to take a map at the competition.

His group consisted of favourites Alexander “Z4muZ” Ihrfos from Sweden, the American, Tim “DaHanG” Fogarty and middle seeded Reynir “Reynir” Thorsteinsson from Iceland.

The competition at the Dreamhack Winter 2009 event is tough and features the best players from all over the world. Weedon said just before he left that “the group could have been better for me, but could also have been a lot worse.” Also read an inteview with Shase here.

Weedon went up against Ihrfos in his first round on the maps ZTN Blood Run and DM6 Campgrounds Redux and lost both 0-20 and 3-17 respectively.

His following group match was against Fogarty. The first round was on the map T9 House of Decay and Fogarty bested Weedon 22-0. The second round was again on ZTN Blood Run and Fogarty managed to win 16-1.

Weedon’s final game was against Thorsteinsson, but regardless of what transpired here, Weedon would still be out the competition. Thorsteinsson beat Weedon in the first map on T9 House of Decay by 13-2. The second map was on DM6 Campground Redux and Weedon managed to win his first map 17-10. The decider was on the map DM13 Lost World and unfortunately Weedon went down 13-0. Fogarty and Ihrfos will be progressing through to the top 16.

Earlier at the rAge Expo in October this year, Stephen “Ph4ntom” Cloete beat Weedon for the chance to compete at the Quake Live – Dreamhack Winter 2009 event. Weedon ended up going to the event in place of Cloete because of passport problems.

Weedon is the second South African to be overseas this month. Like Weedon, Mark “DarthPenguin” Dennison, has also just competed overseas, but in the World Cyber Games in Guitar Hero: World Tour. Dennison too struggled with the level of competition overseas, but more on that story here.

Unlucky for Shase, the group he was in was tough. Z4muz is playing like a beast at the moment. And Dahang was just knocked out!

A special thanks to Mind Sports South Africa for making both Mark “DarthPenguin” Dennison's trip to the WCG 2009 and Travis “Shase” Weedon's trip to DreamHack Winter 2009 possible.

Legally speaking no sports person may compete internationally without authorisation from the national sports federation. So without that ''rubber stamp'', they would not have been allowed to compete. That make sense Just Juice?

I suppose so. Although it would seem our national federations have a way making life interesting. ASA with Caster, SA Rugby with The Beast's Passport issue... And the MSSA -- well where to begin?

Got to love bureaucracy...

MountainKing please don't comment here again. Travis "Shase" Weedon needed absolutely no authorisation from the MSSA. This has been discussed before, so stop thinking the MSSA has any importance in the gaming community.

Last I checked the trips were made possible by Samsung and AVG? Shase didn't compete in a competition where he represented his country.

Roskii why be so dismissive? The fact of the matter is that he DID need authorisation. That is the law. Why don't you go and ask Arena77 if you disagree?

TrollingCaveTroll he competed internationally. That requires national federation authorisation. Same as for any other sporting code in the country.

The fact of the matter is that he DOESN'T need authorisation for an event where he represents HIMSELF and his TEAM, not his country. This has even been confirmed before by the MSSA in previous discussions. MSSA only has authority when the player will represent his country directly in an event, but with Dreamhack, he doesn't.

I know its hard for you and the MSSA to actually feel any worth after all of your failings, but really now, if your gonna try make yourself seem important, do it in a circumstance where you actually have any legality, in this case you have absolutely none, so stop now before you tarnish whatever worth the MSSA has left.

This is a bit like NeoAfrica taking full pride and glory for organising the FIFA World Cup 2010. Yes, sure, "legally"/"technically" (shroud it in whatever terminology you wish), they are a sponsor of the World Cup and without them, it would not be happening, but in reality, their comparitive contribution of pure pittance really doesn't make/break the camel's back.

MSSA's "approval" is no different here. Frankly, the MSSA should be thanking Samsung/AVG that they still take your little organisation seriously enough to allow you to associate with THEIR BRAND and THEIR competition sponsorship. Big ups to them.
