Max 'fAiTh' MclaughlinDo Gaming caught up with Pantheon Gaming and Section 8 after Pantheon easily beat Section 8 last night in the Call of Duty 4 (CoD4) Telkom Do Gaming League.
Luca “Robohobo” Tucconi, from Section 8, says his team did pretty well on Attack.
“We knew they were going to take it slow, so we tried to do the same. We took a few rounds and then traded rounds from there. Then we tried to speed it up and were happy with a half time score of 5 – 7,” he says.
Hayden “Pooks” Huntington, from Pantheon Gaming, admits they thought Section 8 would come at them harder.
“It was a much tighter first half. We thought they would play faster. However, they held back and later started picking it up. In the first two rounds we were peeking too much and they were waiting for us. So we picked up on that and slowed things down. When they tried to move into the A bombsite, we looked for picks and then closed in on them,” he says.
After the half, Pantheon Gaming’s SMGs ripped into Section 8.
“Greg 'Rora' van der Spuy and Huntington had huge games. Chris 'Evax' Noble cross-covered along with one of their AK's at every point. We tried to stack A, but they hit A hard and approached it differently each time, which was hard to defend,” says Tucconi.
Huntington says the team has worked hard on Attack along with the team’s co-ordination.
“They only had two guys in the A bombsite a lot of the time. Tucconi and Emile "GG[noob]" Haughton were a bit separated from guys in A, so we hit it over and over and won some good rounds,” he says. From there Pantheon managed to get ahead and closed the game off easily.
The rest of the season
Tucconi is happy with Section 8’s performance.
“Haughton is calling well and calms the guys down. If we could have backed him up we would have brought the game into our favour. We just need more focus and game time.
“While Jayden 'PhaTNooB' Schröder struggled a bit in the Pantheon game, he and Wicus 'Scammer' Van Rensburg just need to settle down on AK as it’s a bit strat intensive. We were not able to get enough game time this week because of technical challenges so we’re hoping to improve,” he says.
Tucconi realises that while they are playing Bravado next on Crossfire, they are hoping that Max 'fAiTh' Mclaughlin will come more into play as he was limited on Backlot and he should be able to get some more kills on a more open map.
However, he believes there is a definite gap between Pantheon and Bravado and the rest of the division and hopes Section 8 and others will be able to close that gap over time. Section 8 is still hoping for a top four at the end of the leg.
Pantheon confident
Huntington says Pantheon is feeling confident being in front although he knows other teams could catch them. He expects the Mint game could be slightly easier although Pantheon does not want to underestimate them.
“We’re a lot more solid as a team. Everyone is bringing something to practices and we all have the same goal of winning the leg,” he says.
While Pantheon has had a core team of three players (Noble brothers and Huntington) over the past year and then had a number of players making up the final two spots, Huntington says the team has settled with van der Spuy and Dean 'eXtreme' Tesner.
“Tesner brings a lot to the team, especially in working out grenade placement and spam spots. Everyone has played a lot and the team has a good feel,” he says.
When asked whether Pantheon always plays slow, Huntington says it depends on the circumstance.
“We can be aggressive and move quickly when we need to. It’s important to be able to mix up the style of play. We don’t prefer one or the other,” he says. “When we played Bravado we slowed it down because we knew they would try to pick us off.”
He believes Synergy Gaming and BFB laRd will be their toughest opposition and will make up the top four at the end of the leg.
