Last week Do Gaming announced the trial of a swearing filter and its policy about swearing on the site. We launched a poll and invited comment.
After input from the community we have made some changes and updates.
First off, we’ve reset all penalties – they should be cleared when players log in.
Secondly, the automated system will only remove several words or so. While this may be increased it will remain a small number which are deemed absolutely inappropriate irrelevant of context. These will be penalised with the system.
Do Gaming has considered the suggestions regarding the use of acronyms. Due to the infinite number of possible meanings and combinations of the letters in acronyms, a ban on acronyms currently seems unenforceable. That said, if gamers do find a particular acronym offensive, please contact us and we will review whether to moderate it retrospectively.
This should for the most part answer the question around 'gaming terms' which was raised by gamers in the previous article.
In terms of overall posting conduct, players are reminded that derogatory language and slander involving race, gender, sexual preference, religion or creed, including abusive use of otherwise harmless words is not tolerated. You may not use any unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, hateful, racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable language on the site. Hopefully this formal definition will act as a guide for users in their posts – in short: hate speech is unacceptable.
A trial of this revised policy will continue until the end of the month.
Do Gaming appreciates the concerns of its users, which were raised in this discussion. We are also firmly committed to our goals of developing competitive gaming, raising awareness of online gaming and growing the gaming community in South Africa.
A policy such as this is essential to the long-term achievability of these goals.
