The purpose of the Do Gaming forums is to encourage healthy, constructive debate. To that end, Do Gaming is giving gamers a lot of leeway in terms of what they chose to post.
The idea is that through discussion, the gaming industry can grow, mature and be strengthened.
However, there are some boundaries. Here is when Do Gaming will step in: Firstly, no swearing will be tolerated on the forum and will be removed, even when abbreviated versions of the words are used. Gamers will need to find non-swear words to express their dissatisfaction.
Secondly, unsubstantiated criticism will not be allowed. Gamers will need to give an explanation of their criticism in order for a comment to stand.
So for example, if a gamer commented on this article and said, “The editor is an idiot.” The comment would be removed. However, if the gamer said, “The editor is an idiot because he restricts freedom of speech,” the comment would be allowed to stand.
It would also be answered by Do Gaming, highlighting that the point of Do Gaming’s forums are not to restrict freedom of speech, but rather to encourage constructive discussion that helps to grow gaming. If gamers feel Do Gaming is not achieving this, they are welcome to state their reasoning below.
In terms of what falls into grey areas – Do Gaming would like to encourage gamers to refrain from personal attacks on other people or organisations. Rather discuss the issues that are problematic. So for example, instead of a gamer saying, “I hate Do Gaming, their content is terrible,” it would be better to say, “Do Gaming’s coverage of gaming makes me angry for these reasons...”
Gamers are famous for flame wars. In fact, Do Gaming was in a discussion with some gamers who made some very valid points on an issue, but when asked to post the comments on Do Gaming, they refused saying they did not want to get “flamed unnecessarily” for it.
The aims of Do Gaming’s forums are therefore to allow people to have their own opinions, to back those opinions with reasonable arguments and to encourage debate on issues around gaming.
